Recent Outbound/Inbound Trips on the Worcester-Framingham Commuter Rail Line

Let's see. I haven't given an outbound commute update in a while.

Last night's commute home was uneventful and fairly on time. I took the 4:58 p.m. train (otherwise known as the P523) from South Station. I got to Grafton at 6:03 p.m. (the scheduled arrival time is 5:57 p.m.). So, 6 minutes behind schedule.

Today's inbound commute update: 10 minutes or so behind schedule again this morning. I don't think I've been able to take an inbound train in 2008 that has arrived on time. Seeing that today is January 16th, we're at the midway point for the month. The Worcester-Framingham line is looking as though it will not be hitting the on-time performance mark yet again.

This morning I took the 7:19 a.m. from Grafton (this is the P508). We got to Back Bay Station at 8:27 a.m. The scheduled arrival time to Back Bay is supposed to be 8:18 a.m. So we were 9 minutes behind schedule. Since I got off at Back Bay and took the Orange Line to my office, I have no idea what the P508's actual arrival to South Station was.

Non-train Day

Happy Monday!

I drove into Boston this morning, as I have an early evening conference call with some business contacts based in Asia. Since I can't be certain that my call will end in time for me to catch the outbound P525 train (which is scheduled to depart at 8:20 p.m.), I drove in because if I missed the 8:20 p.m. train, the next train on the Worcester-Framingham line does not depart South Station until 10:05 p.m.

I won't be riding the rails tomorrow or Wednesday, as I will be attending an out-of-town business meeting. So I'm hoping that my commutes on Thursday and Friday are good ones, especially since the Boston area is experiencing a winter warm-up.

Fellow commuter rail riders, feel free to keep me posted on this week's commute. I'll continue to keep you posted regarding any blog posts or newspaper articles I find.

Happy Commutes!

Friday, 12/21 Outbound P529 Worcester-Framingham Commuter Rail

I have been off for the Christmas holiday since Thursday, December 19th. I heard through friends that Friday's evenings outbound commuter rail trains running on the Worcester-Framingham line were extremely delayed.

The P529 train which normally leaves South Station at 6:05 p.m. was at least delayed 1 hour. Some of my friends had spouses (or parents or friends) pick them up from Wellesley and other towns along the commuter rail line.

Since a lot of people were off for the Christmas holiday on Friday and since the weather was normal, I have no idea why the evening trains were so delayed.

If anyone had to commute on the trains on either Friday, Monday or yesterday, please feel free to contact me with updates (both good and bad).

Now it is back to work for me!

Monday Outbound to Grafton

I drove into Boston this morning.

The train home last night was about 20 minutes behind schedule. I was on the 5:30 train, so I should have arrived to the Grafton station at 6:45 p.m. Instead I got there at 7:05 p.m., which is only about 10 minutes earlier than if I took the 6:05 p.m. train (assuming that the 6:05 train actually left at 6:05).

South Station was a nightmare last night. ALL the trains were late. I didn't hear an announcement, but someone in my office said that they were told that the commuter rail line was waiting for conductors.

I wonder what the MBTA/MBCR "he said, she said, let's point fingers at everyone" story is on last night's performance? Gee, the story is either (1) union issues with the employees or (2) equipment issues.

So annoying.

Now that we're 18 days into December, I wonder what the Worcester-Framingham commuter rail line's on-time performance rate is? Will it be better than November's 58.1% on-time performance rate?

We're at the half-way point for the month, with the Christmas and New Year's holiday approaching. I've got to believe that there will not be a lot of commuters taking the train into town the week of 12/24.

So the Worcester-Framingham line just might generate a decent December on-time performance rate.

Of course, the Q4 performance rate for this line is shot, thanks to its dismal performance in October (a mere 48.4% on-time rate) and December.

Lt. Governor Tim Murphy Said Worcester Train Line Announcement Forthcoming

Lt. Governor Tim Murphy is quoted in an article that ran in today's Worcester Telegram & Gazette that "an announcement about improved Worcester commuter service will be made in the a few days. "

I can't wait to hear what this announcement will be all about. I hope that they will (1) guarantee that trains will run according to schedule and (2) increase the number of inbound and outbound trains on the Worcester - Framingham - Boston commuter rail line.

The article was mainly about efforts from some Fitchburg and Leominster elected officials regarding improved commuter rail service to those communities. It sounds like the Fitchburg line riders face much of the same issues that impact the Worcester line - mainly extremely long commutes into Boston because of numerous train stops.

Fitchburg and Leominster are located west of Boston and they are very close to Massachusetts/New Hampshire border. Beyond the commuter rail, Route 2 is the main travel route into Boston for Massachusetts residents who live in the Fitchburg/Leominster area.

I hope my elected state officials (Jennifer Callahan and Richard Moore) will be advocating for improved service on the Worcester line!

Globewatch

Posted yesterday to Globewatch on Boston.com. A commuter rail rider who picks up the outbound train at the Back Bay Station, said that it is very difficult trying to figure out which train is the one you need to get on. Of course, the announcements for the trains make it even more confusing. Everyone is passing blame, but no one seems to be doing anything to fix the system.

And what does the T have to say - the Back Bay station is "outdated." They're spending $4 million to upgrade Back Bay, South Station and North Station (which call me crazy, but didn't North Station get upgraded when the new Garden was built???).

Since conductors are suppose to announce the arrival of each train as it reaches Back Bay Station, the T has asked for feedback from customers IF their trains aren't announced.

If you have feedback on anything related to commuter rail service, I encourage you to write to the General Manager of MBTA:
