MBTA Board Greenlights New Commuter Rail Coaches

Just like BostonNOW predicted, the MBTA's Board of Directors voted yesterday to spend $190 million to purchase 75 new double-decker coaches. The new coaches are slated to have washroom facilities and they will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act law.

The Boston Globe didn't even dedicate an entire article to the MBTA Board's vote. They only included this information with their "Local Round-up" news.

I'm not surprised the Boston Globe didn't give much space to this. I don't think they've named a new "Starts and Stops" reporter since Mac Daniel left to go to work for the Commonwealth. I used to look forward to reading "Starts and Stops" and now it's just a bunch of "You can't get there from here" listings.

Keith,

Thanks for visiting.

I agree about your insight into the "Starts and Stops" column. That used to be a great column. In fact, back in the early 1990s, I was an intern at the State Transportation Library in Boston. We used to regularly track "Starts and Stops" because it was a great resource for mass transportation users.

You can definitely tell that the decline in newspaper readers has hit The Globe hard, as so many of their longtime (and good) reporters have moved on. It is too bad that The Globe only seems to be interested in transportation when there is a major scandal brewing - like the Big Dig.

Thanks for visiting.

I noticed that the "Starts and Stops" column reappeared in today's Local News section along with the name of a reporter, so they must have finally assigned it to somebody.
